So, apparently, DC is going to make one of its super heros gay.
Firstly, I'd like to say I think this is somewhat stupid-not because of gay rights and all that. Just because there's no need to alter a pre-existing hero just for the sake of making a point. To me, this seems pandering and insulting, even if the idea is meant to do good.
However, after reading some of the comments-such as "Now they're pushing the life style on our children!" and others that were very similar, I kind of hope they do. Frankly, I would have been happier if they made a new super hero, but at the same time-that might even be worse because people would look at him/her as being nothing but gay, when taking a superhero who already exists would make it easier to see that person for more than just being a "Gay superhero".
It makes me sick that so many people seem to have a problem with this. Was there the same level of hatred when they first made black super heros? Were people saying, "Now they're pressing the black life style onto our children! That's one comic I will NOT be buying!"
Parents (and people) in general need to realise that ignoring gays isn't going to make them go away. And keeping your children from reality can do nothing but harm them. To me, it is so stupid that anyone would be such a dick when it comes to others, and say that being gay is still a sin and a choice and all the shit we've all heard a thousand times before. On a different level, it's like teaching your children to be ashamed of their bodies. Because nudity has become so taboo, we have a society full of people who are total prudes and experience shame at even the thought of sex, something entirely necessary. So why is so terrible to have a gay super hero? What? Should we send the message that the only people that can be excepted in that medium need to be straight? Quite a few superheros are straight, white and male. I think it might be time to change things up a little. And what's wrong with gay heros? Homosexuals have saved the day too.
While I don't think it was a necessary move, I fail to see what's wrong with a gay super hero. I doubt highly that there are going to be any hardcore gay love scenes, male or female. Very few comic books would do that, heterosexual or otherwise. But of course, it is 'out of the ordinary', and every anal retentive mother will have to throw a damn fit, despite the fact that there are comic books about literally every subject imaginable, and little Johny will grow the fuck up one day and learn all about sex. Hiding homosexuality away like it's something to be ashamed of can only damage others and keep the mindset that gays are sinful and unnatural alive and well. And again, while I don't think it's necessary to have a gay super hero to prove a point, it just seems wrong that so many people have a problem with this. Especially when it might actually help some children and teens deal with their emotions as far as homosexuality goes. Maybe them having someone to look up to who frequently saves the day- who happens to be gay, will help make them feel less unaccepted in a country that truly seems to hate them. And maybe it will help people realise that you don't have be straight and straight only to do something good.
